Noel Ellis LP “My Father’s Art”

Noel Ellis brings “My Father’s Art” from Trenchtown to the new generations. Twelve songs written by his father, Alton Ellis, re-recorded over two years through Fifty Fifty Records — a tribute to family history and Jamaican rocksteady.

Most of the sessions went down at JaMin Studio with co-producers Fitzroy Green and Courick Clarke. The repertoire covers “Girl I’ve Got a Date”, “Rock Steady”, “I’m Still in Love With You”, “Willow Tree”, and “Mad Mad”, among others. Dean Fraser, Daniel “Axeman” Thompson, and Leebert “Gibby” Morrison handled the arrangements, with an Australian orchestral layer woven in — adding elegance while keeping the classic foundation intact.

Noel steps into these songs as his own person, not his father’s shadow. He brings his own vocal character into material that already carries serious historical weight, and both things sit together naturally.

“My Father’s Art” is a conversation between father and son that plays out across time. For longtime listeners and those just finding their way into rocksteady, these twelve songs are a solid place to start.
