One of this month’s most compelling collaborations arrives through the EP “That Thing”, a release by Glaswegian legends Mungo’s Hi Fi alongside Aziza Jaye—an artist known for blending reggae roots, soul heritage, and contemporary bass energy into genre-less expressions.

Drawing conceptual inspiration from a 1997 classic by Lauryn Hill, “That Thing” is reimagined through a minimalist yet elegant one-drop framework. A piano-led riddim provides ample space for Aziza’s reflective vocal articulation, while rewritten lyrics introduce an autobiographical dimension—positioning the track not merely as a tribute, but as a narrative repositioning grounded in her personal experience.
Thematic exploration continues with “So It Go,” a tropical dancehall manifesto that firmly asserts Aziza’s affiliation with sound system culture. Here, her identity as a “sound system baby” is expressed through clear and confident metaphor.
The EP closes with “Nah Follow,” a hip-hop-leaning composition that brings together Aziza’s vocal sensibility with the lyrical contribution of Solo Banton. The track comes as a critique of collective pessimism, delivered through sharp diction with an unpretentious tone.
Mungo’s Hi Fi’s warm production and rhythmic precision merge seamlessly with Aziza’s expansive vocal character, positioning “That Thing” as one of the most relevant and resonant contemporary sound system releases of recent years.
