Sharon Marley, the daughter of Rita & Bob Marley returns to the music scene with the release of a new single, ‘Steppah’ featuring Big Youth, a deejay, a legendary early generation of Jamaican toaster. Since deciding to leave the band The Melody Makers in 2002, Sharon has taken a long hiatus from music in terms of recording and performing. It is said that she was more involved in managing the Bob Marley Museum and the Rita Marley Foundation as well as being the A&R of the Ghetto Youth United label. Sharon only came back into contact with the recording world when she released two previous singles, namely ‘Just One More Morning (2021) and Butterflies in the Sky (2022).
Exactly on the reggae month of 2024 on February 9, ‘Steppah’ produced by Leroy Romans & Nicholas Davis was premiered on YouTube and released on all digital music platforms by Gong Gyal Entertainment and distributed by Tuff Gong International. What a historical moment because a week later on February 14th the biopic of his father, ‘Bob Marley: One Love’ was also released which continues to be a hot topic today around the world.
Along with the month of love, the single ‘Steppah’ revolves around Sharon’s past love memories. To accommodate this story, Ingemar Prandergast, who is also Sharon’s son, summarizes it through a romantic and enchanting lyrical message. Musically, we seem to be carried away by the old Lovers rock music but with contemporary vibrations enriched by Sharon’s very soulful voice. Big Youth’s signature toast keeps the rough and tough essence of reggae alive. Meanwhile, spiritual resonance and harmony are emitted through the frequency of 432 Hz which is known as the frequency of therapy, love and harmony.
In the visual department, Donisha Prendergast is the director working on the MV which gives a glimpse of Kingston Jamaica in the 1970s where the love story began.
The single ‘Steppah’ is a warm-up to Sharon’s first solo album titled ‘Love Frequency’ which is planned to be released this year. It’s worth looking forward to, a gift to mark a sweet come back for Sharon. Just can’t wait!
