Madame Whimpsy – “Saving Energy”

The roster of chanteuses within Indonesia’s Jamaican sound landscape continues to grow, bringing with it a stream of refreshing and exciting releases. One of the latest comes from Madame Whimpsy, a singer from Pasuruan in East Java, who has just unveiled her sophomore single, “Saving Energy.”

Behind the moniker is Hanum, an artist who has shown a clear inclination toward embedding thoughtful ideas into her lyrical scheme. Her earlier release, “Diteror Plastik,” already hinted at this direction, offering a reflection on humanity’s uneasy relationship with the environment.

Through the “Saving Energy,” Madame Whimpsy seems to extend that conversation. The track arrives as a gentle yet pointed reflection on the chaos of modern consumerism and the relentless pace of technological growth. Driven by a dense steppers groove layered with ethno-drone textures, its message—echoing Henry David Thoreau’s philosophy of simplicity —lands in a way that feels both contemplative and effortlessly danceable.

Taking the role of producer for the track herself, Madame Whimpsy is supported by Rizki Alfiansyah and Dwi Prasetya as arrangers. On the visual side, she teams up with director Sam Flower, whose raw collage approach fills the video with symbolic imagery that invites viewers to form their own interpretations.

Another highlight of the project lies in its creative process. The video production brought together friends from various communities, lending the work a distinctly collective spirit—one shaped by shared energy, awareness, and a common concern for the well-being of the earth.

This single comes highly recommended for repeated listening, and is now available across major DSP platforms.
