Jam Jah was born in Birmingham in 2001, through the hands of Bongo Damo and later Robbie Don, growing as the sound system division of Friendly Fire Music — an outfit that has held its ground for over two decades with weekly Monday sessions at The Station, Kings Heath. Roots reggae, dub, steppas, and dancehall fill the room each week, driven by MCs, musicians, and selectors who treat every session as a living thing. That consistency has earned Jam Jah its place as one of the longest-running weekly reggae sessions in Europe.

What sets Jam Jah apart is the ease with which it brings worlds together — YT, Solo Banton, and Jamaican legend Errol Dunkley sharing the same floor as emerging voices in the global sound system culture. These are not one-off encounters. They happen with enough regularity that the session has become a genuine home for headliners. Brother Culture and Charlie P have graced it. So have pivotal figures like Parly B, Mr Williamz, and Tippa Irie, alongside high-voltage MCs Lion Art, Pablo Rider, and Tomlin Mystic.

Jam Jah also functions as a proving ground — a space where new talent steps into a real sound system environment, tests their material, builds their confidence, and earns a connection with a crowd that consistently shows up. That commitment extends to meaningful support for women in the scene, with artists and collectives including Sufi Rebel, Kaya M, Housewife’s Choice, and Sisters in Dub all finding their footing here.
The reach of Jam Jah goes well beyond Kings Heath. They are a fixture at Shambala Festival through “Roots Yard” — a reggae and dub area that has long since become a destination in its own right on that festival’s map. Boomtown, Eden Festival, SubDub, and Glastonbury are all on the record, as are Goa Sunsplash and stages across France, Italy, and Turkey. And those sacred Monday nights in Kings Heath? They travel — through recordings, mixtapes, and live streams that carry the sound to ears far from Birmingham.

Jam Jah is a self-contained universe — a constellation built from the energy and ethos of sound system culture at its most alive. Its orbit runs on consistency, collaboration, and community: three forces that together have built a platform where artists return, evolve, and grow across time.
