Pikon Vibration, a reggae band from Wamena, Papua released its first single entitled “Sing For Life” on October 17th. The band that formed in 2019 has four members: Boxcel Haluk (lead vocal & guitar) Ones Wenda (bass), Chalfred Imanuel Wenda (Keys & vocal) and Abius Kudiay (Drum). The song is multilingual in English, Dani and Lani language (two tribes in Wamena, Papua). Besides writing the lyrics, Boxcel is also the man behind the music. The roots bassline and one drop beat of its music vibrate alongside the ethnic elements such as pikon and traditional chant.
The single was produced at Rumandir Studio and mixed by Markus Krey/Wanma. The song tells about human existence on earth, specifically the socio-political life of the people of Papua. Lyrically and thematically it has an intertextual relation to the motto of Arnold Ap, a legendary artist and musician from Papua which says: “we sing for life yesterday, today and tomorrow.” Pikon Vibration makes a call to sing and dance to the music. In the context of “singing (and dancing) for the motherland” this invitation is not an escape from reality but it is more an act of communal celebration and a multi-leveled communication to build empathy and solidarity to face any circumstances in their life.
The single was released in visual format by Difan Weya (director) from Rotisusu which portrays Pikon Vibration performing the song with scenic background of the hills around Sentani Lake in Jayapura.
