Last November 6th, Fyahman the moniker from Gembira Putra Agam (Gembi) released the ‘Hussein Club’ EP. An EP which was released through Dead Records (Deadrec). A label where Fyahman became the first generation roster in 2013.
Fyahman since 2012 has started his musical exploration. There were lots of dubstep and garage gigs at the 24/7 collective (coined by Graham Alain, a London native who grew up in raves and sound system culture). In this era, the sound system culture and Hardcore Continuum timeline (jungle, dubstep, grime and garage) became the biggest inspiration for Fyahman’s sets.
In a press release that kultur accepted, the DJ and producer who are members of the 24/7 collective explained that the “Hussein Club” EP is the identity for his sound as a producer. “As with the first release, this ‘label’ me as Fyahman. This sound happens to be close and relevant to my life. “
This EP contains 2 tracks, the original version of the ‘Hussein Club’ itself and a remix of one of Jakarta’s dance music scenes “top ranking”, John Van der Mijl aka Turismo Avenue (Papaya Records) who was previously involved in one of the Jakarta-based militant drum n bass collectives, Javabass Soundsystem.
The original track “Hussein Club” focuses on beats and effects by centering various samples. Track with a production approach from the adaptation of sound deconstruction and infusion samples from typical Minangkabau instruments; Saluang. “I was born into a family with a very strong Minang tradition. My mother is from Sungai Pua, a nagari (village) known as the blacksmith center in Bukittinggi in the past,” Gembi explained the concept of the Hussein Club. He added, “The Beats in the ‘Hussein Club’ represent that. Also saluang that I attach throughout the composition.”

In addition, the name Hussein was also chosen because the Tabuik tradition is still practiced by the people of West Sumatra, especially in the Pariaman area. “Tabuik for me is a magical and exciting tradition at the same time. There are praises for Hussein ibn Ali, as well as intense rhythm through the Gandang Tansa ensemble,” said Gembi. (Tabuik is a ceremony to commemorate the day of Ashura, commemorating the death of Hussein ibn Ali).
In the hands of John van der Mijl – the figure behind Turismo Avenue – Hussein Club Became more dancefloor-friendly through dubstep beat arrangements which later became jungle / drum & bass. This remix from Turismo Avenue can be the ideal transition for bringing a dubstep / grime / bass set to the classic drum & bass aesthetic.
“I have known Gembi (Gembira Putra a.k.a Fyahman) for a long time, we happen to have the same taste, sharing the love for experimental and bass music. But apart from that, the track is also unique today; a combination of saluang with percussive beats.” John van der Mijl a.k.a Turismo Avenue explains why he wanted to participate in this EP.
Deadrec scheduled the ‘Hussein Club’ as the first series of the duo EP. The second release will be named Hasan Club, with the same composition; one original track and one remix. So that later Hussein / Hasan Club will become a complete package for Fyahman’s release for the end of the year.
Fyahman’s EP ‘Hussein Club’, a figure with charming works from the Jakarta electronic music scene, can also be enjoyed in many DSPs.
