Anslom Nakikus

Kultur was impressed by a video recording of a powerful performance by a Papua New Guinean singer at the World Tourism Expo in Dubai, UAE in March 2022. Through the event he promoted his beloved country through reggae music. In an interview when he was there, the singer shared about his passion for music and how he really admires Bob Marley and Lucky Dube. How he is motivated by the two and have the same mission to disseminate the message of hope, love, peace and unity which has become the aesthetic of reggae.  

Who is the singer that we meant?  Anslom Nakikus, the ex-vocalist of PNG’s popular band ,Barike. Anslom can be said to be the most influential singer in PNG today. He is claimed by the Solomon Times as ‘the popular singing sensation of PNG.’ This predicate was not carelessly attached to him if we see his achievements so far. His latest album, ‘Love Me Again’ (2019) was recorded with the Legendary Late Lucky Dube’s band, ‘One People’ directly in Johannesburg (Sheer Music Publishing/CCA). It consists of 11 tracks that will surely spoil the ears of reggae lovers. Lately, Anslom just released the visual of the album’s single hit, “Love Me Again.”

Anslom is a very productive singer and songwriter. Besides this initial album, he also has produced 6 other albums with Pacific Gold Studio (Rabaul, PNG) and Mangrove Production (New Caledonia): ‘Don’t you lie (1999), Aross (2001), Bong bong (2002), Crazy Best of Anslom (2007), Fool Moon (2008), and Pee N Gee (2014). He also has various domestic achievements like PNG music awards (2001), solo artist of the year (2007), and became the jury of PNG’s popular talents show, Digicel Stars (2019). His songs are quite famous among Pacific islanders earning him live performances inside and outside the country.
