Caltonettes Serenade – ‘Semua’

Caltonettes Serenade is one of Indonesian charmful ska units. A cultured rocksteady-ska outfit from Jakarta. Maybe Ken Lack of “The Calton” himself, will give his full blessing to this 8 piece member band.

Caltonettes Serenade has returned since a while ago. This time, they bring their latest single ‘Semua’. An adult downtempo composition that cleverly places a simple scale formula become an “opulent” touch. At the very beginning of the song, their ingenuity can be heard through the slow arpeggiator inversion piano. Sweet!

Throughout the song, the rhythm section maintains the solemnity of the ska-rocksteady’s ethic, one drop beat and the muted guitar “orderly” interact with alto & tenor sax to keep the euphony of the song. The highlight of this song is the finesse from each member in bringing a respectful harmony, they seem to remind us what’s the true nature of the serenade itself.

Recorded at Velvet Studio Jakarta, while the mixing mastering done at Kingston Factory (Argentina) by Esteban Descalzo, the detailed sound of this song is quite special. The tone of the delayed snare drum at some parts of the song is so thoughtfully appear at the right frequency, the same rigor also shown by the other instruments too. Audio department is taken care of very well.

‘Semua’ is a harmonious single that was released right at the end of 2020 by Caltonettes Serenade, an alluring harmony, a fancy harmony that is surely able to put the big smile on the faces of Boris Gardiner and Doreen Shaffer.
