The Bakesys formed as Bakesys Midday Joggers in early 1990 in the English town of Newbury, 50 miles west of London. The band were inspired by the 3rd wave ska scene of the late 1980’s & the exploits of The Loafers, The Hotknives, The Busters & No Sports.
Their fast paced brand of ska was also heavily influenced by their 2 tone heroes The Specials, reggae/pop maestros The Police & the high energy power pop brilliance of The Jam.
After establishing a strong local following by 1991, The Bakesys began playing shows all around England, sharing stages with the likes of Special Beat, The Selecter, Bad Manners, Des Dekker, Rico Rodriguez, Intensified, 100 Men & Maroon Town.
In the summer of 1992 The Bakesys crossed the English Channel for the first of 4 highly successful visits to Germany, which culminated in October 1994 with a 14 date national tour of Germany. The band stopped gigging at the end of 1994 due to work & family commitments, but in 1997 their fast paced brand of 2 tone ska was at last captured on a 10 song self-titled debut album, which was released by Do the Dog Music.
Fast forward to 2017 & The Bakesys released the “Studio Selections 1991-1995” CD on Do The Dog Music. The 16 track anthology collected together all of the band’s best studio material to date. The Bakesys then returned to the studio to record their first brand new material in over 20 years & released the “More Bakesys” CD mini album on Do The Dog Music also in 2017.
2020 saw The Bakesys notch up their 30th anniversary. To celebrate this, ‘Do The Dog Music’ released a bunch of super rare recordings from the band’s early years in the shape of 3 live albums & the “Pickle My Brain” EP. The band also returned to the studio & then released 2 new singles & the 10 song “More Bakesys” album. The 30th anniversary celebrations also included the release of the “Complete Bakesys” album, a monster 82 song collection of every studio, live & demo track ever recorded by the band.
2021 has so far seen The Bakesys back in the studio working hard on their soon to be released 3rd studio album. The band released their first single from the upcoming album in April on Do The Dog Music. The single features 2 tracks, “You Are Leaving The American Sector” and “Bernauer Strasse Dub”.
This month, The Bakesys released the promo video for their single “Sentences I’d Like To Hear The End Of” as a ‘curtain raiser’ to their full album. This powerful music unit fronted by Kevin Flowerdew will also provide physical format releases of this LP from CD, cassette and vinyl.
Let’s energize yourself with this never-ending energy from Newbury, and dance with The Bakesys!
