Papa U Gee

Papa U Gee is a prominent Japanese reggae figure who has built the Jamaican music scene in his homeland for more than 2 decades.

His career as a musician began when he formed a roots reggae outfit called ASB in 1985. Then in 1988, he joined Banana Siza Hi-Fi, a sound system culture unit from Yokohama with reggae and dancehall style.

In the early 1990s, in order to deepen his knowledge of Jamaican music, Papa U Gee went to Jamaica and lived in the Cockburn Pen – Kingston area, the same area where several well-known figures such as Super Cat, U-Roy, Josey Wales and Early B came from. For 2 years, he interacted with Killamanjaro sound systems, Sugar Minott, Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace and Major Mackerel. This situation is one of the reasons behind his successful musical journey.

Upon his return to Japan in 1992, he launched “Wicked Japanese” under the V.I.P. International imprint. Followed by the single “Yaizu Ko”, which made his name even higher and gained more respect in Japan’s reggae scene. Until 2020, Papa U Gee has produced more than 5 releases. Now he founded a label and music production called Kiteki Muzik.

Papa U Gee has explored a lot of world-class stages, he also often collaborates with world-class Jamaican Sound scenesters.
